Children’s recording privacy notice
Last updated September 23, 2026. This notice covers the Spin and Speak camera and microphone feature. It supplements RubberDuck's Privacy Policy.
What we collect
When a student starts a practice, RubberDuck collects a short video containing the student’s image and voice, a transcript of their speech, automated speaking feedback, the chosen topic, speaking duration, and the account identifier needed to keep the recording private.
Why we collect it
We use the recording to generate feedback and let the student’s authorized class teachers review their speech. Feedback covers clarity, coherence, vocabulary, sentence formulation, fluency, and conciseness. We do not use appearance, accent, dialect, voice pitch, or inferred emotion when scoring a speech.
Who processes it
Cloudflare R2 privately stores the temporary video. OpenAI's API transcribes the audio, classifies transcript safety signals, and creates structured feedback. WorkOS or Supabase provides account authentication, while Cloudflare D1 stores the guardian's consent record. Google Vertex AI generates spoken feedback. Saved videos are not public. Students can replay their own recording during the current practice session. After the session, saved-video playback is restricted to authorized teachers for the student's class; students and parents cannot retrieve saved videos from history.
How moderation works
Automated moderation checks the transcript for safety categories such as self-harm or sexual content involving minors. If a serious signal appears, the student receives a message to contact a trusted adult. This automated check is not a promise of emergency monitoring, and RubberDuck staff do not routinely watch recordings. The feature should never be presented as an emergency or reporting service.
How long we keep it
For practices approved under this notice, saved videos are available to authorized class teachers for 30 days (one month), then scheduled for automatic deletion. Storage-provider deletion is asynchronous and typically completes within 24 hours after expiry. Earlier recordings retain their original 14-day expiry. This video expiry does not delete transcripts, feedback, or learning reports: RubberDuck stores those separately to support learning history and progress. Records use a learner identifier linked to the account, and spoken words may themselves include personal information.
Parent choices
A verified parent or guardian must approve this specific recording use for an under-13 student. A parent may review the information we maintain, withdraw permission, prevent further collection, or request deletion. Withdrawing recording permission does not need to remove access to parts of RubberDuck that do not require camera or microphone collection.
Contact and deletion requests
To review a child's information, withdraw recording permission, or request deletion, email nihaal@rubberduckai.com. Tell us the child's account email and your relationship to them; please do not send a password or sensitive documents in your first message. We will verify your authority before providing or deleting information.
